Editorial
Editorial illustrations are used to
give a visual image for a chosen text. We can see this in everyday life,
newspapers and magazines print illustrations along side articles to catch the
eye of a reader and give a taster of what the article may entail. Below is an
example of a way editorial illustration could be used in newspapers such as The
New York Times. This is an illustration by Joe Ciardiello, I like the way he
overlaps the images making it interesting the reader as it really catches the
eye and makes us stop to look at it in more depth.
After receiving some hand outs from Dolores
Phelps’ I decided to draw images for two of the articles. When looking up the
original articles I found that the image used to accompany the article was a
photograph and not an illustration.
I feel disappointed with this image as I feel it
doesn’t capture the article as well as it could. I do however, like the line I
have used because I think it captures how everything is ringing in his ears but
he is unable to make it stop, which is what the red represents.
Below I have another article I made
an illustration for: I preferred this illustration because I found it capture
the essence of what the article was saying. Oliver Burkeman is very fond of the
topic of anger, after reading his article I found he gave valid arguments and
that it was an enjoyable article to read.
Eric Fraser
Eric Frasers work has surreal and
abstract elements to it. He has a wide range of lines and shapes in his images
which create texture and layering. But he also has other pieces which are more
details but still possess the surreal element.
Below is one of his works ‘Lilliput.’
In this image there is a strong use
of shadows which creates most of the image. The woman at the back left does not
have a shadow which is peculiar but this could also be because of the angle, from
my perspective she should have a shadow. I like the way half of their faces a
blacked out and you only see subtle features to show that it is in fact human.
Below I have created a collage of
Eric Fraser’s work, I found it very interesting to overlay his images as they
are all very surreal already. I feel like the end product was very effective, I
feel as if I have accomplished in making this image more abstract and surreal
than before. I particularly like the pathway I have made which leads to a house
with a lamppost outside, it looks out of place among all the abstract pieces.
I also like the way Eric Fraser uses
text in some of his works so I tried to incorporate this into the collage so I
could best represent Eric Fraser’s style and works.
After making this
collage of his works, I decided I would try my own abstract piece using strong
line and surreal elements. I liked the usage of blacked out areas because I
found it was very effective around areas that were white with small details. My
favourite part of this piece is the bottom left corner as I like the use of
shape and outlines.
